The
Tullahoma Wildcats continued to follow their formula of
coming from behind in the fourth quarter, a dangerous
but effective method that has succeeded five times this
season, by scoring with 25 seconds remaining to beat Lawrence
Co. 28-24 Friday night in Lawrenceburg.
The
victory cements Tullahoma’s (4-2, 6-4) 13th winning
season in John Olive’s 15 years at the helm to the
Wildcat program. The Cats will also make their 13th playoff
appearance during Olive’s tenure with a trip to
Mt. Juliet Friday night. Tullahoma lost in the first round
of the TSSAA playoffs 28-20 to the Bears last year.
With
Shelbyville getting beat soundly by Hillsboro, Tullahoma
was assured of a playoff spot win or loose. Lawrence Co.,
on the other hand, could have taken third place in Region
5-4A away from Tullahoma with a win.
The
home team had its shot, taking a 24-21 lead with 8:42
remaining in the game on an 11-yard touchdown pass from
Garrick Barnett to Trae Brannon. Tullahoma allowed Lawrence
Co. to stay in the game by giving up turnovers, which
was the only way the visitors’ offense was stopped
as evidenced by the lack on a single punt by Tullahoma
during the contest.
Just
as Tullahoma had done during its previous four wins, the
Wildcats never lost focus and never gave up and found
a way to bring home the victory, completing an 80-yard,
nine-play drive with a Chris Bishop three-yard touchdown
inside one minute to play.
The
final drive was a thing of beauty, with Bobby Dowdell,
who rushed for 127 yards on 15 carries, getting much of
the work downfield before Bishop took over on the final
four plays. Bishop completed 14-19 passes on the night
for 161 yards and rushed 19 times for 90 yards and all
four touchdowns.
Tullahoma
jumped out to a 14-0 lead with 3:36 remaining in the first
half, but the home team cut the lead in half when Barnett,
who completed 13-19 throws for 211 yards and two touchdowns,
connected with Jared Green for a 41-yard scoring toss.
Lawrence
Co. tied the game on the first drive of the third quarter
after recovering a surprise onside kick. The home-standing
Wildcats then took their first lead with a 46-yard field
goal by Nick Campbell with 3:39 left in the third, making
the score 17-14.
Tullahoma
re-took the lead on a 16-yard run by Bishop with 1:08
left in the third quarter, but the Lawrence Co. crew bounced
right back and regained the lead as Barnett connected
with Brannon, Region 5-4A’s leading receiver, on
an 11-yard strike to take the 24-21 lead early in the
fourth quarter.
Lawrence
Co. threatened to win the game at the end as they moved
from their 35 to Tullahoma’s four yard line before
time ran out on their hopes for the postseason
